English major with a literature concentration (the traditional English major)

At least nine English courses beyond ENG 110, including

  • 205
  • any one of 206, 207, 210, 211, 212 or 213
  • seven additional courses, at least five of them numbered 300 or above. No more than one semester of independent study or thesis may be counted among the seven, and internship may not be counted.

The selections should demonstrate a balance between British and American literature and between literature before and after 1800 and should represent various genres, literary and cultural traditions, and theoretical approaches.

English major with a drama/theater concentration (being replaced by the theater major)

Those declaring a major later than August 2010 should select the Theater major instead. This concentration is available only to those who declared it prior to the 2010-2011 academic year.

At least nine English and Theater courses beyond ENG 110, including:

  • ENG 205
  • one course in literary history, preferably ENG/THTR 207: Theater History (ENG 206, 210, 211, 212 or 213 also count)
  • two introductory courses in drama and theater chosen from ENG 123 (no longer available), 227 (= ENG 117 = THTR 107), ENG 240, and THTR 215 (= THTR 130), THTR 216 (= THTR 230), and THTR 221
  • three advanced courses in drama and theater (chosen from ENG 301, *303, *304, *335, 345, 346, *369, *370, *371, *390, *391, 495, 496, and Theater 314, 370, 371 and 372 or 373)
  • one additional advanced (300- or 400-level) English or Theater course

The adviser will authorize counting courses marked with an asterisk (*) when they are offered with a drama/theater emphasis.  No more than one semester of internship may be counted.

English major with a film concentration

(Our film curricula overlap with the newly created program in Film and Media Studies.)

At least nine film-focused courses beyond ENG 110, including

  • ENG 140
  • ENG 205
  • any one of ENG 206, 207, 210, 211, 212 or 213
  • ENG 240
  • ENG 251
  • ENG 340 (may be taken more than once depending on topic)
  • Three additional courses selected from the following, at least one of which must be taken outside the English Department:
    • AMS 362: Photography and Memory in American Culture
    • ART 150: Video Art I
    • ART 239: From Samurai to Cyberpunk—Japanese Animation (Anime)
    • A&S 255: Contemporary Society and the Cinema
    • CL 142: Masterworks of German Literature and Film
    • ENG 116: Film and Literature
    • FREN 424: Literature, Ideas, and Film: Twentieth-Century French Culture
    • GERM 424: From Modernism to Postmodernism and Beyond: Literature & Film
    • GERM 431: Literature and Film as a Mirror of Socio-Historical Issues
    • MUS 274: Film Music
    • PHIL 345: Philosophy of Film
    • THTR 312: Plays in Performance

No more than one semester of independent study or thesis may be counted. The adviser will authorize counting special topics courses when they are offered with a film focus.

English major with a writing concentration

At least nine English (literature and writing- or language-focused) courses beyond ENG 110, including

  • 205
  • any one of 206, 207, 210, 211, 212 or 213
  • any two of 231, 250*, 251, 255, or 272/273 (internship)
  • any three of 320, 350*, 351, 360*, 365, or 395 (351 pending Faculty approval)
  • any two other English courses numbered 300 or above  (no more than one semester of independent study or thesis may be counted)

Courses marked with an asterisk (*) may be repeated for credit when they address different topics. The adviser will authorize counting special topics courses toward the concentration when they are offered with a writing focus.
